16 March, 2022

The nervous system is one of the most complex systems of the human body. The main parts of this system include neurons, nerves, brain and spinal cord. Neurological disorders refer to disorders wherein the normal functioning of the nervous system in the spinal cord and human body and brain is affected.

The main causes of neurological disorders could be injury, accident, a chemical reaction to specific medicines, genetic problems or other diseases. If these disorders are identified and diagnosed at an early stage, then they can be easily treated. Here’s a look at a few neurological conditions and the treatments for these disorders.

Neurological Conditions and Their Treatments

1. Headache

One of the common neurological disorders of the human brain is a headache. It can happen at any time, at any age to anybody. The exact cause of headaches is not known as it can happen due to many reasons.

Tension, nausea, cold, neck stiffness, sensitivity to cold or heat, and fever are the common reasons for headaches. Sometimes, it can also occur due to serious health conditions such as a neurological disease, tumour in the brain or cranial bleeding.

Most of the time, you can get relief from headaches with proper sleep and may not need any medications. When it comes to treatment for headaches, your doctor may prescribe pain-killers for persistent headaches. If your headache is persistent your doctor may advise you to undergo a few tests for diagnostic purposes and prescribe you the right treatment depending on your test results. For instance, if you are diagnosed to have tumour, you may need to get the right neuro oncology treatment.

2. Parkinson’s Disease

Another common neurological disorder of the brain and nervous system is Parkinson’s disease. It is a type of nervous system disorder that keeps progressing and impacts the body’s function and coordination. There is no cure or treatment for Parkinson’s disease. Various rehabilitation methods and medicines like dopamine promoters and antidepressants are used to reduce and overcome the symptoms of this disease.

3. Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s disease is a common type of neurological disorder that generally affects the older population. The major symptom of this neurological disease is memory loss. Patients cannot remember even simple things at times. For instance, they may not remember to turn off the stove after using it; they may forget their own house address or their own name in extreme cases. Such patients require a lot of constant care and supervision.

There’s no cure to this disease, but the only available treatment is cognition-enhancing medications to reduce the symptoms.

4. Brain Stroke

Brain stroke is a serious neurological disorder that occurs when the flow of blood to the brain is interrupted. This can be caused due to artery block or some kind of blood clot inside the brain.

If a person with a brain stroke is not treated immediately, then there can be permanent life-threatening side effects. The symptoms of this condition are loss of body balance, issues in speaking, arm weakness, the posture of face getting changed, and blurry vision. In some cases, the patient may become partially or completely paralysed.

An IV injection called tenecteplase or alteplase is given to brain stroke patients within the first 3 hours. If there is a delay in giving this injection, then the recovery can take more time. Some people can recover completely, while some can have lifelong disabilities.

5. Seizure & Epilepsy

In some cases of neurological disorders, the electrical activity of the brain can become abnormal, which can lead to seizures. The cause of seizures could be withdrawal effects from alcohol or drug abuse, and too much alcohol or drug exposure.

A person from any background, of any age, any gender, or race can get this type of neurological disorder. A seizure can also be caused when the functioning of the nerve cells is disrupted. The other causes of seizures are high blood sugar, low blood sugar, high fever, and many more.

Epilepsy is a disorder of the central nervous system wherein the activities of the brain are not normal and it causes loss of awareness, sensations, unusual behaviour and seizures. It is one of the most dangerous kinds of life-threatening neurological diseases. Neurological diseases like tumour, injury or illness can cause epilepsy in a person. If you have a tumour, you can get treatment from the top oncologist in India.

Epilepsy cannot be cured or treated completely, but it can be managed with the help of medicines and other treatment programmes.

It’s important to stay aware of the common symptoms of neurological diseases so that you can get the right treatment with early diagnosis.
