What Is Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer is a type of tumour formed in the tissues of the breast. It’s a common form of cancer in women that is often asymptomatic in its early stages.

Symptoms:

If you have been experiencing any of the following symptoms, you should see a doctor for a breast examination.

  • A lump in the breast or armpit
  • A change in the size or shape of your breast
  • Redness or discharge from your nipple
  • Throbbing/pulsating pain in the breast or armpit
  • Pain, swelling or tenderness in the breast

These symptoms aren’t always signs of breast cancer. But, they are signs of something that’s not right. So, don’t wait. See a doctor. This way, you’ll be in a better position to make well-informed decisions.

If you feel you have any of these symptoms of breast cancer, first do a self-examination and then consult doctor for screening. The tests generally include mammography and ultrasound or MRI.

Types of Surgery

Based on the condition of your breast and the stage of cancer, the doctor will recommend you the type of surgery. Knowing the types of breast cancer surgery can help you understand the treatment. You’ll want to take time to find out all the facts about different types of breast cancer surgery before deciding which one is best for you. The two most common types of breast cancer surgery are mastectomy and lumpectomy.

  • Mastectomy

Mastectomy is the removal of the entire breast and cancerous tissues.

  • Lumpectomy

Lumpectomy is the removal of the tumour and a small area of tissue around it. The surgery is often done instead of a mastectomy in cases of early-stage breast cancer. Lumpectomy does not involve the removal of the entire breast. There is a much lower chance of complications after a lumpectomy than there is after a mastectomy.

Breast Reconstruction Surgery

Patients usually go for breast reconstruction surgery after mastectomy to feel complete again. The entire breast is recreated using the patient’s tissues, fat and muscle for achieving natural-looking results.

The type of surgery that your doctor suggests for you depends on several factors like the patient’s age, size of the tumour, medical history, patient’s present health condition and so on. Look for the best breast cancer doctors to treat you and talk with your doctor about what type of breast cancer surgery is best for you.
