Department Activity

We manage routinely acute and chronic pain conditions like postoperative pain services, cancer related pain syndromes, nerve radiofrequency ablation due to neuropathic pain, treatment related peripheral neuropathy, back pain, joint pain like knee, shoulder and hip, facial pain in head and neck cancers, post herpetic neuralgia, musculoskeletal pain, headaches, psychological, spiritual pain and grief using multimodal pain techniques e.g.

1.Interventional Pain Management

  • CT guided Neurolytic Coeliac plexus block for upper abdominal malignancies, superior hypogastric for lower abdominal and ganglion impar block for perineal pain.
  • CT/ fluoroscopy guided blocks for head & neck cancer causing facial pain and headache.

  • Ultrasound Guided peripheral nerve, fasciae plane blocks and myofascial trigger points for thoracic cancers, nerve entrapment syndromes.
  • Radiofrequency Ablation of nerves, Chemical Neurolysis(alcohol/ phenol/glycerol) using RFA machine.
USG guided Erector spinae block for thoracic pain
Radiofrequency ablation of nerves

2. We follow the concept of ‘TOTAL’ Pain

All aspects of patients’ suffering not only physical pain but also psychological, spiritual and social distress are taken into account via a holistic and empathetic approach.

3. Musculoskeletal pain

Dry and wet needling which is beneficial in handling myofascial pain, scar pain, post- operative pain and rehabilitation.

4. Multi modal analgesia

A team based approach through a referral from the primary oncologist and directly by the wish of the patient. This ensures best possible solution for the patient in terms of benefit, cost and minimization of adverse and untoward effects.

5. Pain Free Hospital

Care givers and medical staff are very responsive to the patient and trained in recognizing pain as the fifth vital sign. They promptly institute corrective measures and call the pain management team for early consult and relief of pain.

We at RGCI sets out to provide the best possible care for people with life-limiting illnesses and those close to them, and all our staff and volunteers play a vital part in this.

Acute pain services are managed with Patient control analgesia (PCA) pumps, epidural and neuraxial blocks. Chronic Cancer pain is managed using a multimodal approach, ranging from the use of oral analgesics including NSAIDs, co-analgesics, various forms of morphine, opioid titration, transdermal fentanyl patch, buprenorphine patch, Neurolytic nerve blocks to radiofrequency ablation of nerves given under fluoroscopic guidance.
The Pain Service actively provides Palliative Care services as well where treatment is offered for a variety of symptoms affecting those patients with advanced cancer.
