Dr. Kundan Singh Chufal is a distinguished Radiation Oncologist in Delhi with over two decades of experience in advanced radiotherapy for cancer care. He currently serves as a Senior Consultant in Radiation Oncology at the Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute & Research Centre (RGCIRC) in New Delhi. Dr. Chufal specializes in treating a wide range of cancers – with particular focus on thoracic (lung) cancers, breast cancer, sarcomas, and bone tumors – using state-of-the-art radiation techniques. He was part of the team that established one of North India’s first Intensity-Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) programs, reflecting his pioneering role in bringing cutting-edge treatments to the region. Over the years, he has gained international training in modern radiotherapy (including specialized courses in Mumbai and advanced technique workshops in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Switzerland), ensuring that patients under his care benefit from the latest technological advancements in cancer treatment.
In daily practice, Dr. Chufal is recognized for utilizing advanced techniques to enhance patient outcomes and comfort. He has extensive expertise in Image-Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT) and respiratory gating – methods that use imaging and timing to track tumors in moving organs (like the lungs, breast, liver, or prostate) so that radiation hits the cancer precisely while sparing healthy tissue. He also has a special interest in high-precision therapies such as Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT), Stereotactic Radiotherapy (SRT), and Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS), which deliver focused high-dose radiation to tumors with millimeter accuracy. For appropriate cases, he employs 3D High-Dose-Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy, an internal radiation technique, to effectively treat cancers, such as intraoperative brachytherapy for sarcoma patients. By combining these advanced modalities, Dr. Chufal has successfully treated numerous patients with complex tumors, achieving excellent tumor control with minimized side effects.
Always at the forefront of innovation, Dr. Chufal is now actively incorporating Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools into radiation oncology to further improve precision and decision-making. He is the lead author of a 2023 review on the emerging role of AI in radiotherapy, outlining how machine learning models can speed up treatment planning and increase accuracy in cancer care. By adopting AI-driven techniques for tasks such as image analysis and treatment optimization, he aims to enhance patient outcomes and experiences, demonstrating his commitment to delivering world-class, technologically advanced care. Patients under Dr. Chufal’s care can thus expect not only compassionate guidance but also cutting-edge treatment options designed to maximize effectiveness and quality of life.
In 2023, Dr. Chufal and colleagues published a landmark 10-year study involving 254 patients with locally advanced esophageal cancer treated with a tri-modality approach—neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy followed by surgery. This significant Indian study demonstrated excellent outcomes, including high rates of pathological complete response and prolonged survival, earning recognition as the “Best Published Paper” of 2023. In a 2024 study focusing on cardiac safety during radiotherapy for breast cancer, Dr. Chufal’s team meticulously assessed cardiac biomarkers (troponin, BNP) in patients undergoing left-sided radiotherapy. Their findings confirmed no significant cardiac impact when employing advanced heart-sparing techniques, underscoring his commitment to safe and effective cancer treatments. Read More
