Department of Medical Physics
Medical Physics is an applied branch of physics concerned with the application of the concepts and methods of physics to the diagnosis and treatment of human disease. The Medical Physics Division is providing comprehensive Physics and Dosimetric services for the treatment of cancer patients and has expertise in related areas. This division is responsible to the radiation protection of the institution.
The Medical Physicist has acquired expertise in all advanced treatment techniques like 3DCRT, IMRT,IMAT,IGRT,SBRT, SRT, SRS,4D Respiratory gating, Brachytherapy etc.
Exclusive Services of Medical Physics
The essential responsibility of Medical Physicist’s clinical practice is to assure the safe and effective delivery of radiation to achieve therapeutic result as prescribed in patient care. The Division services are Dosimetric treatment planning, Commissioning of new radiation generating equipments and Treatment planning systems, calibration of radiation monitoring instruments, QA and maintenance of treatment machines, Verification of Radiation dose delivery, Radiation Safety, room designing, and compliance with radiation safety regulator (AERB).
The Division also advises and assists allied departments like Diagnostic Radiology, Nuclear Medicine and blood bank (GIC) regarding matters of Radiation safety, Radiation source procurement, radiation waste disposal ,Operating licences of the radiation generating equipments, Monitoring of personal dosimetry services and compliance with regulatory authority (AERB).
The efforts of the Division are comprised of Research, Education, Internships and Practical training designed to guide Radiation oncologists, Medical Physicists and Radiotherapy Technologists.
Medical Physics division is equipped with state of art facility. Details of equipments are:
1. Teletherapy
- Varian – True Beam Stx Linear accelerator with multiple photon energies of 6MV, 10MV, 15MV, 6FFF and 10 FFF, with electron energies of 6, 9, 12 & 15 MeV and having HD 120 MLC leaves (2.5 mm) along with Portal Dosimetry. This is capable of delivering 3DCRT, IMRT, IGRT, Rapid Arc and Respiratory gating techniques.
- Elekta – Synergy Linear accelerator with photon energies of 4MV and 6MV, with electron energies of 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 & 15 MeV having 80 Leaves MLC. This is capable of delivering 3DCRT, IMRT and VMAT techniques.
- Varian – Clinac-iX Linear accelerator with dual photon energies of 6MV & 15MV, electron of 6,9,12 & 15 MeV having Millennium 120 MLC leaves (5mm) along with Portal Dosimetry. This is capable of delivering 3DCRT, IMRT, IGRT, Rapid Arc and Respiratory gating techniques.
- Siemens – Artiste Linear accelerator with dual photon energies of 6MV & 7FFF, Electrons of 6,9,12,15,18 and 21 MeV and having 160 MLC leaves (5mm),and MV-CBCT. This machine is capable of delivering 3DCRT, IMRT, IGRT and Respiratory gating techniques.
- Siemens – Primus Linear accelerator having 6MV photon and 58 MLC leaves. This is capable of delivering 3DCRT and IMRT technique.
- Varian – Acuity Simulator with Amorphous silicon (a-Si) Flat panel Imager which produces a high-quality reference image for daily verification, freeing treatment machines for patient treatment and helping you increase patient throughput.
- Siemens Somatom Sensation-Open CT- Simulator with high-speed Ultra Fast detectors enabling a virtually simultaneous readout of two projections for each detector element resulting in up to 64-slice acquisition.
2. Brachy Therapy
- Elekta – Nucletron Micro-Selectron HDR machine facilitates the brachy application including ICRT, ILRT, IORT, MIAMI, MUPIT and Interstitial Implants.
