About

Dr. Sanjay Thulkar is a senior Onco-Radiologist with over 34 years of experience after post-graduation. He is currently serving as Director, Department of Radiology at Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute & Research Centre (RGCIRC), New Delhi.

He has extensive experience in cancer radiology, particularly in breast, head and neck, and gynaecological imaging. He also has expertise in non-vascular interventional radiology and pain management, with extensive experience in CT, MRI and Doppler ultrasound.

Dr. Thulkar has been associated with AIIMS, New Delhi since 1992 and has headed the Cancer Radiology Department for nearly 30 years. He was instrumental in developing a full-fledged Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Onco-Radiology.

His expertise includes ultrasound-, CT- and mammography-guided biopsies and FNACs, & non vascular interventional radiological procedure

He has made significant contributions to academics and research, with more than 200 PubMed-indexed publications, over 25 textbook chapters, guidance of more than 100 MD/MS and PhD theses as chief or co-guide, and participation in more than 50 interdepartmental collaborative research projects.

Developed an indigenous MR-compatible breast tumour marker clip system in collaboration with IIT Delhi.
Introduced stereotactic breast biopsy, vacuum-assisted breast biopsy and pre-operative hook-wire localisation of non-palpable breast cancer at AIIMS.
Introduced TRUS-guided sextant biopsy of the prostate at AIIMS.
Contributed to advanced interventional procedures including radiofrequency ablation of liver tumours, transarterial radioembolisation, interstitial brachytherapy for liver tumours and PET-CT-guided biopsies.
Expertise in ultrasound-guided coeliac plexus and superior hypogastric plexus blocks for pain management.
Delivered guest lectures and conducted workshops in cancer radiology and interventional radiology.
Served as an external examiner for MD Radio-diagnosis and post-doctoral radiology programmes in India and Nepal.
Contributed to academic and institutional activities including faculty selection, equipment procurement and various institutional committees at AIIMS & other institutes of national importance.
