Dr. Shashi Rakheja of Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute highlights the urgency of cancer screening as India faces a rising cancer burden, with 1.4 million new cases and 910,000 deaths in 2022 (WHO). The average age of diagnosis is significantly younger than in Western countries, yet screening rates remain abysmally low—cervical cancer at 1.9% and breast cancer at 0.9%. Early detection through screenings like mammograms, pap smears, and blood tests can improve survival and reduce treatment intensity.
