Leading cancer experts from the city, under the aegis of Oncology Forum, came together to discuss the treatment options of Stage-4 Ewing’s Sarcomas or cancer of the bones. Organized by Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Centre (RGCIRC), the meet had heads of departments from leading cancer care centres including Apollo, Max, Dharamshila, Narayana and Fortis.

Oncology  Forum is a grouping of leading minds in cancer care in the city formed to exchange best practices so that the benefits of latest technologies and therapies reach the patients faster.

“Earlier survival rates in stage 4 bone cancer patients were very less lasting for a few months only. These patients were treated at different centres with different protocols as per the understanding of the treating oncologists. However new therapies hold much promise even in late stage cancer. These therapies which include Targeted therapies, Immuno therapies or a combination of different therapies have led to 3-4 year survival period and improvement in quality of life, said Dr. Himanshu Rohela, Consultant – Orthopedic Oncology at RGCIRC.

The objective of this conference was to discuss case studies of stage 4 bone cancer patients and to explore alternative options which are adopted by eminent faculties in the Capital state, added Dr Rohela.

The incidence of bone cancer, which has spread to other parts (metastatic cancer),  is going up in the country. Unfortunately the sarcoma Tumor goes undiagnosed in limbs or an inappropriate surgery is done leading to delay in presentation at a cancer centre.

Sarcoma or bone cancer is not very common. However one should not ignore some symptoms such as developing a fracture without any fall and swelling that develops in any limb that is without pain. Generally Ewing’s Sarcoma occurs in children in the age group of 5 to 25, Dr Rohela added.

Early diagnosis and timely intervention gives a chance of cure in substantial amount of patients.
