Department of Gastroenterology as a super-speciality involves management of patients suffering from disorders of digestive system and liver. The department of Gastroenterology at Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute & Research Centre has every modern technology which is used for diagnosing and treating patients of gastrointestinal and liver diseases, with special emphasis on gastrointestinal and liver cancers. Our team of trained Gastroenterologist and endoscopist has a vast experience in dealing with diagnostic and therapeutic aspect of Cancer related Gastrointestinal and liver problems including palliative care. Our department has all the modern instruments used by some of the best centres in the world and has been doing a large number of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for more than 25 years. The department is recognised as a major tertiary care referral centre in North India.
FACILITIES
- An Upper Endoscopy is a procedure used to visually examine your upper digestive system with a tiny camera on the end of a long, flexible tube. A specialist in diseases of the digestive system (gastroenterologist) uses endoscopy to examine and take biopsies from diseased area in upper gastrointestinal tract including food pipe, stomach and small intestine
- Colonoscopy is an examination used to evaluate the large intestine (colon). During a colonoscopy exam, a thin, flexible tube is inserted into the rectum. A tiny video camera at the tip of the tube allows the doctor to view the inside of colon. If necessary, tissue samples (biopsies) can be taken through the scope during a colonoscopy examination.
- Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a procedure used to examine the pancreatic and bile ducts. A bendable, lighted tube (endoscope) is placed through the mouth and into stomach and first part of the small intestine (duodenum) and lower end of pancreatic and bile duct are entered into for various purposes.
- EUS – Echoendoscope is a device which has an ultrasound probe attached to it. It is used to perform Endosonography, a technique in which endoscopy is performed from within the oesophagus, stomach or intestines, to identify any abnormalities that might be present in the wall of the intubated organ or somewhere near it. The equipment enhances the view in comparison with the conventional ultrasonography & also helps in taking safe biopsies from lesions located close to the G.I tract located close to the G.I tract. We also use it therapeutic purpose including relief of jaundice and coil injection for gastric varix (dilated vein which cause life threatening bleed).
- Esophageal/ Duodenal/ Biliary and Colonic Stenting – These procedures include placement of a self expanding metal stent at various site in the gastrointestinal system for immediate and permanent relief of symptoms including difficulty in eating, vomiting, jaundice and inability to pass stool.
- Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy Tube Placement – Placement of feeding tube directly into the stomach through the skin for establishing a route of feeding in patient who can not eat with their mouth.
- Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR) and Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD) is a procedure to remove cancerous or other abnormal tissues (lesions) from the digestive tract. Endoscopic mucosal resection is performed with a long, narrow tube equipped with a light, video camera and other instruments. During EMR/ ESD of the upper digestive tract, the tube (endoscope) is passed down your throat to reach an abnormality in your esophagus, stomach or upper part of the small intestine (duodenum).To remove lesions from the colon, the tube is guided up through the anus. Primarily a treatment procedure, EMR/ESD is also used to collect tissues for diagnosis. If cancer is present, EMR/ESD can help determine if the cancer has invaded tissues beneath the digestive tract lining.
- Cholangioscopy is a procedure which uses special tube which has tiny camera attached at its end and is used for diagnosis and management of patients who have jaundice due to blockage of bile duct.
