Colorectal Cancer

10 November, 2020

It is simple to treat colorectal cancer and does not require an aggressive course of treatment. But that does not mean that it should be taken lightly. In cancer surgery, numerous teams of physicians often work together to create an overall treatment plan for a patient that usually requires or combines various forms of therapy.

A surgeon, a surgical oncologist, a radiation oncologist, and a gastroenterologist are usually involved in colorectal cancer treatment. An active cancer care units also include a physician specializing in gastrointestinal tract function and infections, and hosts of other health care professionals, such as administrative assistants, nursing staff, oncology nurses, social workers, pharmacists, psychiatrists, dietitians, and others.

Choices and recommendations for treatment rely on several factors, including the type and stage of cancer, possible side effects, and the patient’s wishes and overall well-being. Take the time to understand all the treatment options and make sure you ask questions about unclear issues. Speak to the doctor about the expectations of what drug and what to consider while receiving the treatment.

Cancer Treatment Options

Options for colorectal cancer treatment include surgery. Surgery includes the detachment of the tumor and its related tissues during an operation. The side effects of surgery include pain and tenderness in the affected area.

Another choice is radiation therapy. In a radiation treatment, high-energy x-rays is used to destroy cancer cells. Side effects from radiation treatment can include fatigue, mild skin reactions, a disturbed stomach, and loose bowel movements.

Treatments that involve medications also exist. The methods of systemic drugs used for colorectal cancer include Chemotherapy, targeted surgery, and immunotherapy. Chemotherapy is the use of drugs to kill cancer cells; usually by blocking cancer cells from growing, differentiating, and producing more cells. Chemotherapy can have fatigue, nausea, or diarrhea as a side-effect.

Targeted treatment is a technique that destroys cancer’s particular genes, receptors, or tissue conditions that contribute to cancer progression and survival. Please speak to the doctor about the likely side effects of a prescribed prescription and how to treat them. A facial and upper body rash that can be avoided or reduced by multiple medications can be a side effect of targeted therapies.

Immunotherapy, also known as biologic therapy, is designed to strengthen the body’s natural defenses to defeat cancer. Different types of immunotherapy can cause various adverse effects. The most common side effects of immunotherapy can be nausea, rash, diarrhea, fatigue, headache, muscle pain, bone pain, knee pain, stomach pain, itching, vomiting, coughing, diminished appetite, and shortness of breath.

Other Side-effects

Physical symptoms and side effects caused by cancer surgery can bear emotional, social, and financial implications. To counter any of these implications, a technique is used, which is called palliative treatment or compassionate care. It is a crucial part of your diagnosis, along with drugs used to delay, stop, or eradicate cancer.

Palliative care focuses on reinforcing how you experience during healing by managing symptoms and assisting patients and their families with other, non-medical criteria. Any human, regardless of age or type and stage of cancer, may be given this method of care. It  still works well as it continues shortly after a cancer diagnosis. There are also less severe complications, more excellent quality of life, and are more relaxed with the treatment for patients who receive palliative care along with cancer therapy.

With medications, lifestyle changes, ways of healing, behavioral and spiritual care, and other treatments often used, palliative services vary extensively. Palliative treatment, such as chemotherapy, surgery, or radiation therapy, like those meant to get rid of cancer, can be used to you again as a part of the treatment.

Until therapy starts, consult with the surgeon about the expectations of each operation in the treatment plan. It would be best if you also discussed the possible side effects of the specific treatment plan and palliative care options.

During therapy, the health care provider will ask you to answer concerns about your symptoms and side effects and to discuss each issue. Be sure to tell the health care workers whenever you have any trouble. It helps the health care provider to treat potential problems and side effects as quickly as possible. It can also help deter potentially severe complications
