Prostate Cancer

5 August, 2022

Prostate Cancer is one of the most common cancers diagnosed amongst men. It is often discovered when it is in an advanced stage, making it difficult to treat. Once diagnosed, it is always important to understand its treatment and the early signs and symptoms to seek proper medical care. This blog will look at the prostate cancer treatment, its symptoms and how to avoid it.

Prostate cancer is cancer that starts in the prostate, a small gland in the male reproductive system. The prostate is located just below the bladder. Prostate cancer usually grows slowly and is initially confined to the prostate gland, where it may not cause any symptoms. However, as cancer grows, it may begin to spread to nearby tissues and organs, such as the bladder. When this happens, the cancer is more likely to cause symptoms.

Symptoms

The early signs and symptoms of prostate cancer may include:

  • A need to urinate more frequently, especially at night
  • Difficulty urinating, a weak stream of urine, pain or burning sensation during urination
  • Blood in the urine
  • Lower back pain
  • Problems with bowel movements, such as constipation

Risk Factors

  • Age: The most common risk factor for prostate cancer is age. The older a man is, the greater is his risk of developing prostate cancer.
  • Family History and Race: Men with a father or brother who had prostate cancer are more likely to develop the disease themselves. African American men are also at greater risk than men of other races.
  • Exposure to certain chemicals
  • Diet high in fat

Complications

If prostate cancer is left untreated, it can spread to other parts of the body, most commonly the bones, which may cause further problems, such as pain, fractures, and problems with kidney function.

Diagnosis and Treatment

There are several methods of diagnosing prostate cancer, including a digital rectal exam, prostate-specific antigen test, a combination of a physical examination, a blood test, imaging tests and transrectal ultrasound.

Treatment options vary depending on the stage and aggressiveness of cancer. The options include surgery, radiation therapy, hormone therapy, and chemotherapy. Prostate cancer that is caught early has a high survival rate, so it is important to be aware of the prostate cancer symptoms and get regular check-ups.

Preventive Measures to Take for Prostate Cancer

One of the best ways to prevent prostate cancer is to eat a healthy diet. Foods that are rich in antioxidants, such as fruits and vegetables, can help protect your cells from damage that can lead to cancer. You should also try to limit your intake of saturated fats and red meat, as these have been linked to an increased risk of prostate cancer.

Regular exercise is another way to reduce your risk of prostate cancer. Exercise helps keep your body healthy and can also reduce the levels of testosterone, which can promote the growth of prostate cancer cells.
